Adventure apparel and outdoor equipment retailer Kathmandu has closed three of its Christchurch-based stores, due to the earthquake which hit the city on Tuesday.

According to a notice posted on the Australian Securities Exchange this week, the disaster which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, caused damage to its Christchurch-based head office and New Zealand distribution centre in particular. The New Zealand distribution centre may also be further impacted by the wider damage to transport infrastructure in the city.

The retailer said that “it is unknown at this stage when both premises can be fully reoccupied, and this is also dependent upon the site services being restored”.

At this stage, Kathmandu management said it did not consider that the latest earthquake would impact significantly on trading in New Zealand., although a further update would be provided to the market next week.

All other Kathmandu stores are open and fully operational and are being managed by the retailer's Melbourne office.
