Legendary designer Kate Spade has passed away.

The designer's namesake label has standalone stores in Sydney, as well as distribution in Myer and The Iconic.

New York-based parent brand Tapestry has issued a statement on the news.

"We at Kate Spade New York just learned of the incredibly sad news that Kate Spade has passed.

"Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand. Kate will be dearly missed.

"Our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time."

Kate Spade New York was founded in 1993, debuting with just six handbag styles. It turned into a global lifestlye empire, before being sold to Neiman Marcus Group in 2006.

There are more than 300 Kate Spade stores globally.

Australian fashion identities have turned to social media to express their sympathies.

"Her endless inspiration and timelessness will be missed forever," Jackie Frank wrote on her Instagram page.

"If there is an American accessories icon, it was Kate Spade," Melissa Hoyer wrote on hers. "And a philanthropist and environmentalist to boot."

"A brilliant designer who made the world brighter," Elle Australia continued.

"Spade, 55, left a lasting impact on the fashion industry with her joyous and witty designs," Harper's Bazaar Australia contributed.

"Such terribly, terribly sad news overnight...Remembering all the joy and beauty she brought to this world," Leona Edmiston said.
