JD Sports is joining a selection of other fashion retailers opening stores at Sunshine Plaza, which is 90 kilometres north of Brisbane CBD in Queensland.

The global sporting retailer is headlining 11 recent and upcoming openings at the centre this year.

JD Sports will open a 636 square metre store in the centre sometime before Christmas 2026, with its opening coming after global brand Lululemon migrated to a larger site in the centre. Meanwhile, American-born equestrian apparel and footwear brand Ariat opened a store there, bringing its local store count to seven.

JD Sports GM of marketing across APAC, Michael Weatherston, confirmed this will be the sporting retailer’s 13th store in Queensland and 80th store nationally.

“It was always important to bring our brand to the Sunshine Coast and ensure we could give local consumers the ability to experience the world of JD Sports,” Weatherston said.

“The Sunshine Coast is an important and growing market, and Sunshine Plaza’s scale, location and strong mix of leading brands made it a natural choice for our next store.”

A further six new retailers are preparing to open at Sunshine Plaza between August and October, including Australian brands Sabo, Oroton, Frankly My Dear and Afends, as well as Mask & Co and The Mobile Phone Company.

Cotton On will also relocate to a larger store, following Lululemon’s recent expansion.

Centre manager Brian Turner said the arrival of JD Sports and the other retailers shows confidence in the region’s growing customer base.

“JD Sports is a highly anticipated addition to Sunshine Plaza and a major new name for the Sunshine Coast retail market,” Turner said.

“We’re excited to be giving local customers access to another sought-after international retailer closer to home, while strengthening our existing fashion and activewear mix. We look forward to sharing further details as the store moves closer to opening.”

Further information about JD Sports and the centre’s upcoming store openings will be announced as individual trading dates are confirmed.
