Fashion brands exporting to Japan will be able to access Austrade services in the devastated nation once again from Monday April 11.

Austrade country manager of Japan Elizabeth Masamune revealed while some of Austrade's Japanese offices were currently offering basic services to Australian businesses, full services would resume in 10 days time.

Austrade services were suspended in Japan following the country's March 11 earthquake, tsunami and resulting nuclear power plant damage.

Masamune also shared expectations on Japan's return to normal trade and economic activity.

“Past experiences of disasters of this nature suggest Japan's growth will return in the medium to long term,” Masamune wrote in an email to industry.

“Japan's GDP is forecast to contract by only 0.5 to one per cent in the next quarter according to [Japanese company] Namura, based on Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry data.”

Austrade reported all major ports in eastern Japan are back in operation, with economic activity and infrastructure in western Japan largely unaffected by the earthquake and tsunami.

However Masamune reported there remains “uncertainty” in Tokyo and Fukishima as a result of disruption to services and infrastructure.

Advice from the Australian government is that Australians should not travel to Tokyo, areas surrounding Tokyo and Honshu north of Tokyo at this time.
