The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reported a 3.8% year-on-year growth in retail sales for October.

Hitting $24.6 billion in revenue during the month, the increase was also marked slightly higher than September sales which sat at 3.6%.

Clothing, accessories and footwear saw a surge of 4.6% in October while department stores scored a spike of 4.7%.

Australian Retailers Association (ARA) executice director Russell Zimmerman believes said that despite potential drawbacks, the sector's growth is postive.

“Despite the ARA being disappointed not to have seen a rate cut earlier this week by the Reserve Bank of Australia which would have provided a strong spending incentive in the lead up to Christmas, retailers are well placed to meet our Christmas growth predictions.”

State-by-state results show that Tasmania recorded the largest spending with 5.4% growth, followed by Victoria at 5.2% and New South Wales at 4.2%.
