As the Ever Given ship is dislodged from the Suez Canal, Ragtrader founder Fraser McEwing discusses the situation and its effect on Australian fashion.
The blockage of the Suez Canal won’t have much impact on clothing or textile supply to Australia, according to a prominent importer.
Australia’s main supply sources are in Asia, led by China and followed by Bangladesh, Vietnam and India, none of which rely on the Suez Canal for shipping.
About the only supply country that might be affected is Turkey.
It supplies small quantities of upmarket textiles destined for Australia, but is especially skilled at tailored garments such as suits, trousers and jackets.
Turkey is a major supplier in these categories to Hugo Boss.
