Fashion sales have rebounded after a tough April with retail turnover rising 2.2% according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The positive turnaround for the industry came after a disappointing 0.8% decrease in retail turnover for the month of April.

Department stores also saw improved results with a turnover growth of 3.9% leading the way across all industries.

The report also found that online retail sales continued to grow with online contributing 5.6% of total retail turnover for the month of May, up from 5.4% in April.

National Retail Association (NRA) CEO Dominique Lamb said the transition to the colder months had helped fashion retailers rebound after poor showings in April.

“Retail has now recorded two consecutive solid rises in turnover and we're optimistic that it means that the sector has turned the corner following a modest start to 2018.

“It's particularly pleasing to see department stores as well as clothing, footwear and personal accessories bounce back in May.

“This can be put down to the cold weather beginning to arrive after an unusually warm autumn period.

“The NRA expects to see department stores and clothing sales continue to rise in the coming months as Aussies flock to the shops to cash in on winter shopping bargains.”
