Online fashion sales in Australia saw a strong improvement in April with a 14.9% growth during the month according to research by NAB.

The increase in online sales comes after a slow March for the fashion industry online when total growth slowed to 6% for the month.

The positive numbers for April also represent a positive step after a weak year for online retail in April 2017 with sales up 17.9% compared to last year.

According to the report, online retail sales are equivalent to 8.2% of spending at traditional brick and mortar retailers with Australians spending approximately $25.8 billion in online sales over the past 12 months.

However, the good news for online fashion retailers comes in contrast to overall sales numbers for the month of April with overall sales falling 0.8% for the industry according to data from the ABS.

In its report, NAB stated that while its data suggested a potential slump in retail value, the results for April could see that trend turn around.

“Online retail growth is now well above the lows of the same period in 2017, but is turning down.

“However, if recent monthly results continue, trend values should improve.”
