NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has extended the Greater Sydney lockdown for an additional week.

The news sees lockdown continue in local government areas Greater Sydney, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Blue Mountains and the Central Coast.

The news comes as NSW reports 27 new local cases today, with Berejiklian foreshadowing that tomorrow's number could be higher.

Berejiklian said that the lockdown will help to reduce mobility of citizens, which will help stop the spread.

"If we do the hard work now, we will have the best chance of not going into lockdown again," she said.

NSW Health is also urging those who live in the local government areas of Fairfield, Liverpool and Canterbury-Bankstown to strictly limit their movements and avoid leaving the house if possible.

The Premier added that in the coming days the government will release a plan of what the exit from lockdown will look like, as well as what the following weeks will also look like.

This plan is set to help businesses, organisations and the wider community to plan ahead.

The extended lockdown is now expected to end at 11.59pm on 16 July.

Mask wearing rules remain in place across the state.
