New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has extended the Greater Sydney lockdown for at least two weeks.

The lockdown, which was previously extended to this Friday July 16, will stay in place to at least Friday July 30.

The news comes as NSW recorded 97 new cases of COVID-19 to 8pm last night.

The current restrictions will remain in place, including the limited reasons to leave home, a 10km radius limit from home, restrictions on gatherings and mask-wearing.

According to retail groups including the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the National Retail Association, each week that the NSW lockdown continues, impacted retailers collectively lose approximately $1 billion in trade per week.

The extension of the lockdown comes as the NSW and Commonwealth Governments announce a joint support package for the state.

"We have a situation where many businesses are facing weeks of lost revenue, with no end in sight and some are preparing to close for good," ARA CEO Paul Zahra said.

"Displaced workers are unsure how they’re going to pay their bills and rent.

"The economic support package has certainly come as a welcome relief.

"We’re into week three of this lockdown, and people and businesses up until now have been trying to survive without a proper safety net in place," he said.
