The Australian Government has announced it will provide Ethical Clothing Australia with $4 million in funding over four years.

Ethical Clothing Australia is a voluntary accreditation and labelling system recognising textile, clothing and footwear businesses which provide fair wages and decent conditions for Australian workers.

The joint industry/union initiative is governed by the independent, not-for-profit Homeworker Code Committee.

Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia executive Michele O'Neil said the funding will enable Ethical Clothing Australia to ensure more supply chains comply with all relevant Australian labour laws.

"Unfortunately 'Australian-made' does not always mean ethically made, so it's imperative that we continue to work with the industry to ensure workers are not exploited and receive fair wages and decent conditions," she said.

More than 50 Australian brands and manufacturers are currently accredited under the system.
