She's one of the most powerful Australians in global fashion.
Now InStyle editor-in-chief Laura Brown has called for a re-think of the fashion calendar.
Accepting her Australian Fashion Laureate award yesterday, Brown told ragtrader.com.au it was time for the industry to refine its seasonal showcases.
"I think there is a lot of rituals in the fashion industry that are quite dated," she said.
"This idea that we are going to fashion shows for a month a year, it’s a bit like it’s 1958. I think people that should show, should show.
"I think people that make a great shirt, should make a great shirt.
"I don’t think everybody needs to feel obliged to present themselves in a particular way.
"Do what you do best and get it out there in a way that feels most organic to you.
"If you want to sell a pair of jeans on Instagram, do it. There aren’t really any rules any more.
"But sometimes, fashion has a little bit of jet-lag in that regard."
Brown, who rose the ranks of Australian fashion before moving to New York, was awarded the 2019 Australian Fashion Laureate.
She joins a list of high-profile recipients including Carla Zampatti, Akira Isogawa and Toni Maticevski.
