A pair of executives for Australian sportswear label 2XU have teamed up to launch a new label called TheRY, designing sports-level garments for pregnant women and new mums.

Entrepreneur and former chairman of 2XU Clyde Davenport and material science expert Cindy Liu are running the new label, with Liu as the CEO and research officer. Liu left 2XU to focus on this venture, while Davenport sold the rest of stake in the company.

TheRY - which stands for The Reason Why - offers a collection of compression leggings and socks, bamboo tees, and compression sleeves and wrists, for pre-natal and post-natal pregnancy.

The pair launched the label after finding a gap in the market for quality compression garments to wear during and after pregnancy, with Davenport and Liu using their compression knowledge and fabric experience to develop the new line.

Through their work at 2XU, Davenport and Liu have worked with professional athletes, which require specific styles of garment to gain a competitive edge in performance. Through this, the pair learned about compression and technical fabric development. The two proposed to apply the same approach to researching pregnancy and postpartum needs.

They investigated the physiological changes the body experiences during and after pregnancy and found that 80% of women suffer circulation issues during pregnancy, according to a 2014 journal article titled ‘Cardiovascular Physiology of Pregnancy’ by Monika Sanghavi and John D. Rutherford.

“We have created proprietary fabrics that are premium, lightweight and super comfortable to produce the best maternity garments on the market,” Davenport and Liu said. “All of our compression products have been medically tested and are TGA approved. Our graduated compression and the benefits they provide, redefines what mothers should expect out of their leggings.”

TheRY also partner with organisations that promote maternal health, including Send Hope Not Flowers, whose work concentrates on preventing death during childbirth.
