Online retail sales have continued to grow at a vastly stronger rate than the traditional bricks-and-mortar retail sector - with figures in the billions - according to a new report.

The NAB Online Retail Sales Index, conducted in partnership with Quantium, has confirmed that Australians spent $13.5 billion online for the year to April 2013.

According to the study, the level that is equivalent to around 6.0 per cent of traditional retail spending and identifies a rebound in online sales growth in line with the typical levels not seen since late 2011.

Domestic online sales in particular, recovered strongly in April 2013 – growing by +23 per cent year-on-year, compared with just +9 per cent year-on-year in March.

International online sales by comparison increased by +24 per cent year-on-year, recording a more modest improvement from +18 per cent in March.

The analysis also suggests that the strongest rates of growth this quarter were recorded in the Fashion, Daily Deals and Media categories.

Spending patterns remain quite different between the online and traditional retail sectors and also differ by age group.

The key demographic groups and states for online retailing have remained largely unchanged – with the strongest per capita spending being among those aged 25 to 54 (particularly between 35 and 44) and residents in the ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia.
