New Zealand womenswear brand Verge has marked the end of an era.

Founders Ian Webster and Neil Brabant have announced that they will be stepping aside from the iconic heritage brand.

The pair cite health reasons for what they say has been an extremely difficult decision.

“Last year when I suffered a heart attack it gave me a reality check and whilst both Neil and I are going to sorely miss the close knit team we have developed at Verge, the timing seemed right for both of our families,” Webster said.

New owners are actively being sought for the business and discussions are underway with a number of interested parties.

“After 40 years working in an industry that I love, it will be difficult to walk away but I believe it is time to literally ‘pass the baton’ so that Verge can be taken to the next stage of its evolution,” Brabant said.

“We are doing everything within our power to ensure that new owners are found in either New Zealand or Australia so that any disruption to our loyal staff, suppliers and customers can be minimised,” he added.

Both Webster and Brabant are confident that a buyer will be found based on the popularity that the brand has enjoyed over the last 17 years on both sides of the Tasman.

New Zealand Fashion Week MD Dame Pieter Stewart recognised their contribution in a statement.

“Neil and Ian have made a significant industry contribution over four decades and will be sorely missed.

There are not many businesses with supplier and customer relationships spanning forty years and that is a reflection of their integrity and skill in a very competitive market.

Not only have they developed one of Australasia’s most successful design manufacturing businesses they have also quietly worked behind the scenes mentoring new industry talent.”
