David Jones has assumed a key role in an iconic revival.
The retailer has joined forces with heritage Australian handbag and accessories brand Glomesh, and signed the label on a department store exclusive basis.
The iconic brand announced its revival in late 2013 and will launch into David Jones stores and David Jones online this month.
The first drop of the revitalised Glomesh collection will land in David Jones’ Elizabeth Street store (NSW) and Bourke Street store (VIC) in addition to www.davidjones.com.au.
The move marks a significant return for Glomesh, which was stocked in David Jones for over two decades during the 1960s through to the 1980s.
Glomesh, established in 1958 by Hungarian immigrants Louis and Alice Kennedy, became a leading label in the 1960s and 70s, but dissipated in the 1980s.
As reported on ragtrader.com.au, in 2013 it was announced that the brand would be revived and relaunched by Daniel Goldberg, grandson of the original founders.
Commenting on the tie-up, David Jones general manager footwear and accessories Damian Burke said the brand is a consumer favourite.
“David Jones is thrilled to support Glomesh in the brand’s return to the Australian fashion market. There is a lot of nostalgia associated with the brand, and our customer’s have already expressed their delight over the revival of Glomesh.”
Glomesh CEO Daniel Goldberg said he is delighted to see the brand joining the David Jones fold again.
“We anticipate the brand to be popular with our young and old customers alike, with the new collection speaking to fashion forward youth whilst retaining the iconic Glomesh feel that will no doubt thrill the older generations that may still have Glomesh bag’s in their wardrobes,” he said.
“I am delighted to announce our partnership with David Jones. Glomesh is a luxury heritage brand that fits perfectly with the history of this prestigious department store.
“This is an exciting new chapter for Glomesh following our recent relaunch in December, and I look forward to introducing new customers to a brand that is steeped in nostalgia and that holds quality and style as its fundamental characteristics.”
