David Jones has launched a collaboration with iconic Australian performer Carlotta ahead of the 2016 Mardi Gras celebrations.

The department store has teamed up with Carlotta as a creative director on the design of a dedicated window display and instore performance in its flagship Elizabeth Street store in Sydney CBD.

The display and series of events will look to pay tribute to Mardi Gras' legacy in Australia as well as Carlotta's own personal contribution to the LGBTIQ community and entertainment industry.

David Jones chief marketing officer David Robinson said that the company is proud to show its support to the LGBTIQ community ahead of this weekend's celebrations.

“We are proud and excited to be celebrating the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

“David Jones supports diversity and self-expression for both customers and staff, and it is important to be involved in one of Sydney’s most iconic events that epitomises these values.”

“Carlotta has had a monumental impact on the LGBTIQ and wider community, and it was an honour and privilege that she would return to David Jones where she once worked, to collaborate with us on our Mardi Gras celebrations.”

Carlotta was a fixture on the Kings Cross club scene as a performer from the 1960s-1990s but previously completed stints at David Jones in its art department painting scenes, backdrops and mannequin faces for its windows.

David Jones' Elizabeth and Market Street stores will host Mardi Gras pride events tonight from 5-9pm including a headline performance by Carlotta and performances by Sydney drag queen show producer Amelia Airhead alongside Minnie Cooper and Prada Clutch.

The store will also feature glitter beard stations, lash and nail services and DJ acts.
