Over 80 per cent of designers want to start their own business.
This is according to new research from CATC Design School and Billy Blue College of Design.
The survey of 1,500 Australian workers aged 18-35 reveals that an overwhelming majority want to work for themselves.
The results come despite a recent spate of designer brand administrations including Josh Goot, Kirrily Johnston and Lisa Ho.
The research also shows that designers and creatives are much more likely say they are “following their passion”.
Close to 78 per cent are following their passion, compared with just 55 per cent generally.
Additionally, 71 per cent of young designers believe they would go further in their career if they had further education.
Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, executive dean of design at CATC Design School and Billy Blue College of Design, said designers need to be prepared to work hard.
"It’s great to see that so many young designers have the ambition to be their own boss or start their own business.
"However, it’s also important for young designers to be well prepared. If you’re thinking of running your own design business, it’s likely that you’ll need to wear multiple hats including marketing, customer service, and finance and administration.
"You also need to be patient, and work hard on developing strong people skills, in addition to your great design skills.
"Ensuring a steady and ongoing flow of business is another big challenge for many new design businesses, so you need to have a strong marketing plan, and ensure you a building a broad network of potential clients.
"Importantly, you need to have the right connections, a solid business plan in place, and be ready to be in it for the long-haul."
