An emerging designer competition which has helped launch over 160 young Australian labels, is on the hunt for hungry designers.

The Debut competition, run as part of the Fashion Exposed trade fair, has now opened its applications for the 2013 season, and is urging emerging apparel and accessory designers to enter, with the focus in Sydney 2013 on spring/summer.

Introduced in Sydney 2006, Debut is now an established industry entry platform and design competition for new fashion and accessory labels and has assisted various labels to launch their fashion profile, including Limedrop, Alexi Freeman, Trimapee, Since Grey, Kuwaii, Donna Sgro, as well as last season’s winners Brkich and Ginny & Jude Designs, to date.

The 2013 season will follow similar guidelines to previous years, with only new and emerging designers based in either Australia or New Zealand and in business less than three years eligible to apply.

Selection criteria for Debut 2013 also includes the following:

  • Debut Apparel – womenswear, menswear, urban/streetwear

  • Debut Accessory – jewellery, millinery, footwear, bags and belts, accessories

  • Label must be new and preferably showing first collection

  • Collection must be original, fresh and innovative

  • Collection must be shown for the first time

  • Collection must be appropriate for relevant season

  • Collection must be executed to the highest professional standard, and

  • The collection to be submitted for judging must not exceed more than six looks (outfits) or 30 individual items
