Department Store David Jones is gearing up for the 2026 Lunar New Year on February 17 by expanding its international payments partnership with Alipay+ and WeChat Pay.
Alipay+ is a leading Chinese third-party mobile payment platform, managed under Ant International.
The service is now available across 16 David Jones stores nationwide. In addition, Alipay for Chinese users, a wallet partner of Alipay+, is also accepted online at davidjones.com and through the David Jones mobile app.
According to David Jones, this rollout significantly builds on the initial 2022 launch at the Bourke Street and Elizabeth Street flagship stores.
Alipay+ supports more than 1.8 billion user accounts across over 40 international e-wallets and banking apps globally, including Alipay for Chinese consumers, AlipayHK (Hong Kong), Touch 'n Go eWallet (Malaysia), GCash (the Philippines), and more.
The expansion of payment terminals has also enabled David Jones to broaden its digital payment offering, with WeChat Pay now available across these 16 stores. WeChat has over 1.4 billion monthly active users globally and is integrated with WeChat pay, which combines social media, messaging and payments.
To mark this expansion, David Jones and Alipay+ have also partnered on a series of activations and exclusive offers during Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse. This includes festive experiences in-store and online while shopping the department store’s curated range of fashion, beauty, home, and luxury brands.
David Jones GM of financial services, Steve Price, said the expansion underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to evolving with customer expectations.
“We are pleased to expand our partnerships, allowing more customers to shop with ease across our store network and online,” Price said. “China remains one of Australia’s most important visitor markets, with close to one million Chinese travellers visiting in the past year alone.
“This expansion, alongside our Year of the Horse celebrations, reinforces our focus on delivering exceptional, culturally relevant experiences for our customers.”
Ant International’s Alipay+ GM of SEA, South Asia and ANZ, Edward Yue, said the company has been in partnership with David Jones since 2019. He noted that this deal enable multiple international e-wallet and bank apps to be accepted via Alipay+, including from other key Asian markets, across six major cities and 16 store locations throughout Australia.
“It represents an important step in our journey to serve not just international visitors, but also the local residents who are part of Australia's vibrant multicultural society,” Yue said.
