Fashion company Country Road Group has confirmed it is planning to open 10 new or refurbished stores across Australia as part of a portfolio review.
This follows media reports that reveal the group’s Country Road brand is planning to close its Sydney flagship at Queen Victoria Building, with sister brand Trenery already shutting its store in Mosman north of Sydney.
Reports also claim Country Road’s Pitt Street Mall store is scheduled to close in 2028 when its lease ends.
Regarding the Pitt Street Mall store, Country Road Group indicated that if a change is required at the end of its lease, it will aim to find a suitable new location.
"From time to time, we review our retail store portfolio to ensure we're continuing to meet the needs of our customers,” a Country Road Group spokesperson told Ragtrader.
“We are committed to delivering great experiences throughout our networks and we are investing in our stores, with 10 new or refurbished stores opening by the end of the year.”
Some of the key new or refurbished stores in Country Road include a new flagship in Brisbane by late August in a heritage building along the Queen Street Mall, a refurbished store in Mosman by September, a relocated store in Eastland in Victoria, and an expanded and refurbished store at Burnside Village near Adelaide in October.
Country Road, Trenery and Witchery will also open new stores in October at Chatswood Chase as part of a centre redevelopment, and Trenery, Mimco and Politix will open new stores at 260 Collins Street in Melbourne as part of a relaunch of the centre.
The Country Road brand was founded in 1974, and has since scaled into a group of five brands which is currently owned by Woolworths Holdings Limited, a department store group in South Africa.
The latest news comes after tough trading for the Country Road Group brands over the last year. For the 26 weeks to December 29, 2025, the Australian fashion group’s gross profit dropped by 13.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, with its profit before tax down 93.6 per cent.
Sales across Country Road Group had also fallen by 6.2 per cent for the 26 weeks to December 29 last year, with comparable store sales down 7.8 per cent in the same period.
The group has also witness two key exits, including Raju Vuppalapati who stepped down from group CEO role, and Melanie Remai who stepped down from the helm of Trenery and has taken on the lead role of Cue and Veronika Maine.
Steven Cook has since taken the helm at Country Road Group, with Paul Conti being appointed acting GM of Trenery.
