It was an initiative dominated by fashion retail partners - but the online sales event intended to drive traffic in the lead up to Christmas crashed it.

Click Frenzy crashed within minutes of launching last night, with registered shoppers forced to visit the websites of participating retailers in order to view discounts on offer.

However, a number of participating retail sites also crashed including that of department store Myer.

Rival department store David Jones staged its own 'Christmas Frenzy' earlier in the day, crashing its site in the process.

Fashion companies involved in Click Frenzy included Westfield, Sportscraft, Diana Ferrari, Jag, General Pants, Saba and Jeanswest.

Not all participating websites had Click Frenzy offers visible on their websites, with some discount codes also difficult to source for consumers.

While Click Frenzy organisers issued a statement on Facebook defending the event's response in line with that of "Boxing Day sales", customer reaction on social media has been hostile.
