Stolen clothing and jewellery items have been seized as part of a pre-Christmas shoplifting blitz in Sydney.

Over 100 people have been charged and around $27,000 worth of goods have been recovered as part of a five-day blitz dubbed Operation Lightfingers.

Detective chief inspector Stuart Bell revealed details to reporters yesterday, with stolen clothing from "numerous different retail stores" and jewellery piled among perfume, small electrical goods and DVD seizures.

The blitz ran from Tuesday to Saturday, with plain-clothes police and CCTV used to arrest shoplifters largely based within the city, Broadway and Eastgardens.

Inspector Bell warned there would be more operations in the lead up to Christmas, with increased foot traffic and busy sales staff attracting shoplifters throughout the season.

A similar operation last year led to around 90 people being charged.

As reported on ragtrader.com.au last week, the Centre for Retail Research estimates that shoplifting and fraud will cost global retailers more than $16.3 billion over the Christmas holiday season.
