Jayson Brunsdon on "sexy, borderline, trashy glamour" and what it means in this era.
Designer: Jayson Brunsdon
Label: Jayson Brunsdon
Collection title: Rio
MBFWA runway show: Wednesday, April 9, 3pm.
How would you describe the overall theme/look of your MBFWA collection?
The theme is a new take on sexy, borderline, trashy glamour and what that means in this era.
Where did the inspiration for the collection come from?
I love Rio de Janeiro. We go every summer and I really wanted to say something personal about it. It's the Carioca cultural clash, the funky favela flavour, the sexy, sultry glamour of Ipanema, the vibrancy of the lifestyle.
What are the key fabrics, colours and/or prints used throughout?
I work closely with an amazing French fabric mill that produces extraordinarily rich and vibrant jacquards and brocades. There's a metallic thread throughout in rich browns, rusts, greens, turquoise and bronze snake skins.
I've collaged different textures and patterns together to create a tonal clash, an urgent and exciting mix that personified Rio for me.
And it's a conversation about what is trashy, what is glamour, what is chic? I don't think we live in an elegant era.
It's very random. Snatches of colour, of information. This inspires me.
Paillettes say Carnival to me, in juicy colours. Orange, lime and tangerine.
They're fun, they're silly and they have a tacky quality that I adore .
There's also a tutti-frutti print that I developed. It's hilarious!
Describe the construction details.
The shapes are quite simple.
I think we need to address a sense of the casual in design. Clothes need to be easy to wear now.
The construction only becomes interesting when fabrics are collaged and patch worked together. Otherwise it's the ease of a zip. As simple as that.
Are there any particular styles that feature more prominently?
Short dresses, short skirts and shorts. It's leggy, it's summer! I had no feeling for pants. But it isn't body con.. It's flared and short in a Latin kind of way. Brazilian bombshells.
How many pieces will be included in your MBFWA collection?
36 looks in the show.
Which garments feature more heavily? Hero pieces or favourites?
Ra ra skirts. They're so fabulously tacky! I wanted to take that idea and make something fun out of it. Flirty, sassy, sexy short hemlines on fit-and-flare dresses and skirts feature prominently.
How does this collection compare to your previous Fashion Week collection?
This is a more youthful collection than I've done before.
I wanted to take the label in a more exciting direction after the 10th year celebration last year.
No more lady like! I want a more liberated woman, a modern woman. We live in an exciting era for fashion where anything goes.
There are so many trends now that they overlap each other.
Really there are no trends. It's all about being an individual.
I'm interested in talking about glamour again...what is it to be glamorous now? What is tacky? What is chic? What is trashy?
