Melbourne's Federation Square will host a bevy of international fashion entrepreneurs and artists next month for the launch of Carbon, Australia's first discussion forum dedicated to street culture and design.

The premiere event has been created by Acclaim Magazine managing director and editor in chief Andrew Montell and is designed to “educate, inspire and entertain” the fashion industry through a series of discussion forums.

Each forum will be focused on a specific aspect of contemporary street fashion, design and culture and topics will include: Building a t-shirt label, Beyond the brand, the Art of Hype (media communication and design in the digital age), and Craftsmanship and imagination.

The topics will be presented by guest speakers who have had a significant impact on the realms of style, design and culture today, including founders from labels such as New York-based Mishka, LA-based The Hundreds and Southeast Asian culture site and branding company Streething.

Other creative forces, such a New York-based modern artist Futura and editor in chief of Complex magazine will round out the list of guest speakers to share their creative insights and success stories.

Montell said the target audience for Carbon is varied and ranges from university students studying design, fashion and communication/media-based courses, to aspiring entrepreneurs, as well as industry people working in contemporary street fashion/design/contemporary culture.

“Hopefully there's something for everyone,” he said. “Progress in general is a good thing for the industry that we operate in and by bringing together successful and inspirational entrepreneurs to share their stories, ideas and opinions I think it helps to bring the public up to speed with some of the really interesting progressions going on worldwide.

“I'm hoping it will also motivate more people to go out there and try something new and inspire businesses to expand their horizons and contribute to growing Australian industry here and abroad.”

The Carbon discussion forums will commence on Saturday April 30 and will be accompanied by a series of art and photographic exhibitions, with the official event launch party to be held Friday April 29 at Federation Square’s Atrium in Melbourne.
