Australian underwear brand Boody has gained third-party test confirmation that its period underwear contains zero traces of PFAS.

The test was conducted by German testing service provider TUV Rheinland.

Boody claimed this is a major milestone for leakproof underwear manufacturing, with traces of PFAS determined in similar products on a global scale due to waterproof coatings.

PFAS (or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) consist of thousands of non-organic substances, most commonly found in products that resist stains and water. According to the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care (DHAC), most people are likely to have had some exposure to PFAS.

“PFAS exposure has not been shown to cause disease in humans,” the DHAC website reads. “However, it has been associated with mildly elevated levels of cholesterol, effects on kidney function and effects on the levels of some hormones.

“The differences reported for these associations have generally been small and unlikely to be important to health outcomes.”

DHAC said PFAS take a long time to break down and added that it is recommended to limit exposure where possible.

Boody global head of brand and marketing Ruth Haffenden said the brand will continue to undertake testing on its products.

“Period underwear is and remains the most sustainable option for those who bleed, and we’re confident this certification will lead the way and inspire other brands to get the all-clear for the safety of customers far and wide,” Haffenden said.

“With PFAS a cause for concern in the leak-proof underwear space, it was a no-brainer to go that extra step and do our due diligence as a brand.

“Boody continues to be a safe and trusted brand for Australians far and wide, with testing now introduced on an ongoing basis to further safeguard our products.”

Boody’s leak-proof range includes a mix of viscose made from organically grown bamboo, seaweed fibre and cotton across four layers of material.

Gynaecologist and fertility specialist Dr Peta Wright commented alongside Boody, saying the presence of PFAS in period underwear may affect reproductive health, lead to fertility issues and immune system damage.

“With PFAs posing a threat to the health of consumers that trust brands for menstrual products and solutions, it’s critical to gain third-party testing and undertake the steps required of all brands within this space.”

Boody’s leakproof range includes both full brief and classic bikini, in sizes XS to 3XL.

The leak-proof underwear range is available via the Boody website, The Iconic, Amazon, as well as in-store at local pharmacies and IGAs.
