3000 retail workers will be stood down as Hanes Brands becomes the latest company to shutter stores nationally.

In a statement, Hanes said it would close 450 stores in Australia including Bonds, Bras N Things, Champion and Sheridan.

The company joins retail giants such as Cotton On Group, Country Road Group, Premier Retail and Mosaic Brands in announcing closures as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Hanes Brands Group president David Bortolussi said there was no choice left for the business.

“We have been doing our best to keep our stores open and our people safe and in work,” he said.

“However, with the federal and state governments announcing increasingly stringent measures we now have no choice but to close all of our store networks across Australia, to protect our store teams and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.”

Hanes will continue to pay full salary to all impacted permanent team members for at least two weeks after the store closures, after which employees can access their leave entitlements.

eCommerce and wholesale customer channels will continue to operate as normal.
