Embattled designer Bettina Liano has confirmed further changes ahead for her local retail network.
Liano, back in control of her business after a fall into administration in 2011, revealed she will soon close her Chapel Street store in Melbourne, following the expiry of the lease this month.
As previously reported on ragtrader.com.au, the Chapel Street store closure follows a controversial period for the designer and marks the second Australian store slashed from her local retail network in weeks.
Commenting on the closure, Liano said that with the lease expiring, she has taken the opportunity to not sign on another term after her 24 year run there.
However, she said there are plans to reopen in Melbourne later this year and she will take “a few months to review the Melbourne market and the next location, possibly in the CBD”.
“The location and fit out of the store has dated; [but] it’s very nostalgic, being my first flagship store; my kids grew up there. I can’t thank the people of Melbourne enough and I can’t wait to come back again.”
Liano added that following the opening of her first international boutique – in New York City – this month, her key focus going forward will be on the US market and online.
“We have experienced growth online, [and] I’m focusing on a different strategy to build up sales,” she said.
“The American market understands my product, and I’m sure I will do well there and online.”
The New York Bettina Liano boutique will open on February 20, 2013.
In Australia, the Bettina Liano range is now only available at The Strand Arcade in Sydney and online.
