Australia represented the best in emerging fashion design at the iD International Emerging Designer Awards, with down-under designers gaining the top awards.
Despite competition from over 20 countries, the number of finalists from Australia and New Zealand increased markedly from previous years.
Kate Bolzonello, graduate of RMIT University, was awarded first prize at the awards, held in New Zealand. With a playful yet articulate aesthetic, Bolzonello impressed the judges with her use of transparency and volume, implying the loftiness of clouds.
Aside from winning the competition's covetedaris-based internship with Italian design house Gaiambattista Valli, Bolzonello also won $5000 in prize money.
Shinaz Engineer, Queensland University of Technology graduate, was awarded second prize for her collection, 'A Kaleidoscopic Perspective'. The eclectic collection featured sculptural jackets, swirling prints, laser-engraved leathers and lycra body suits. The industry newcomer was also praised for her application of ambitious printing processes that mimic the landscape of the body.
“I want my clothes to inspire people, evoking thought, encouraging people to look at the world through the conceptual lens of the kaleidoscope and being open to differing perspectives in life,” Engineer said.
The esteemed judging panel included fashion designer Akira Isogawa, Margi Robertson of fashion label Nom*D, Tanya Carlson of fashion label Carlson, Stefano Sopelza of Mittelmoda Fashion Award, Italy and Vogue.com.au editor Damien Woolnough.
The award was part of iD Dunedin Fashion Week.
