The Australian Retailer's Association (ARA) is predicting fashion, flower, book and jewellery retailers to experience a substantial lift in sales this coming weekend, as customers try to find a gift for Mother's Day.

Executive director of the ARA, Russel Zimmerman, said that retailers will flock to the shops to find something last-minute for their mothers.

"As Mother’s Day is a special day for Australians to celebrate the important women in their lives, we predict shoppers will be visiting retail stores in search of the right gift to spoil their mum.

"The ARA believes retailers who specialise in the sale of flowers, fashion, books and jewellery will notice a substantial increase in sales this weekend, with many of these retailers offering a range of exclusive offers."

The floral industry, as expected, experiences a surge in sales in preparation for Mother's Day, as Interflora CEO, Gerry Gerrard said, it is one of the busiest times of the year.

"Mother’s Day is the second busiest time of the year for our florists, and we have already seen a surge in orders since the beginning of April.

"While Chrysanthemums remain the flower of choice for Mother’s Day, we have also noticed a distinct and growing trend for long native arrangements, indoor plants, and succulents."

Meanwhile, books have also become a gift-of-choice for Mother's Day.

"In the lead-up to Mother’s Day, we see a rise in the sale of key categories of Fiction, Biography and Cooking," general manager Dymocks, Sharyn Villaverde said.
