Amazon is set to build 26 new utility-scale wind and solar projects across eight regions including Australia over the coming years.
The news comes as the Australian arm reported net sales of $1.12 billion in 2020 - a 99.4% increase year-on-year - a report from the Sydney Morning Herald indicates.
According to the report, $511 million of this is from sales of goods from Amazon’s online store, while Amazon Marketplace revenue was reported at $126 million.
Alongside its sales boost in 2020, Amazon reported that became the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, helping it to reach its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The 26 new wind and solar projects will pop up across Australia, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, the UK, and the US, bringing the business' total number of renewable energy projects to 127.
Amazon’s investments will supply its operations with more than 18,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually.
This will help it to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the initial 2030 target.
