New research is set to reignite the GST threshold debate, revealing overseas etailers avoided tax on more than $6.2 billion worth of products shipped to Australian consumers last year.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released its first estimate of the amount Australians shoppers spend on international etailers.

The ABS reported that around $6.23 billion of goods worth less than the government's low-value threshold were imported in the 2011-12 financial year.

The low value threshold applies to goods worth less than $1000.

The ABS admitted that a large number of parcels imported under the low value threshold (LVT) of $1000 were flooding into Australia and were not included in the macroeconomic accounts.

The ABS estimated Australians spent about $4.55 billion to domestic etailrts during the same period, taking the total value of online shopping to more than $10 billion.
