Local Supply has collaborated with Visa to design a pair of sunglasses with a difference.

Waveshades are equipped with a secure payment chip that can make contactless payments.

Developed in partnership with wearable payment specialist INAMO, the collaboration is an Australian first.

The shades feature Visa payWave technology and can be loaded with a specific amount of funds, much like a prepaid card.

The trial follows the introduction of an NFC-enabled payment ring for Team Visa athletes during the Rio Olympics, as well as wearable pay bands, which were also designed for active use.

Local Supply founder Sean Satha said the collaboration was a perfect fit for the brand.

“At Local Supply we’re always looking for ways to innovate and create better products, so when the opportunity arose to partner with Visa it was a no brainer.

"Fusing fashion with technology makes perfect sense.

"We’ve always been about focusing on the moment, so we’re super excited to enable consumers to make purchases, in an easy, no-fuss way.”

The limited edition sunglasses have been prototyped at Laneway Festivals around the country and following the success of the initial trial, a partnership with World Surf League has now been confirmed.

Ahead of World Surf League’s upcoming event, Local Supply x Visa WaveShades will continue to trial the sunglasses with a select few of influencers attending the event.

According to Visa, 79% of face-to-face Visa transactions are via Visa payWave.

This amounts to 147.6 million monthly Visa payWave transactions.
