Quiksilver's $ loss
Surfwear group Quiksilver reveals it has been forced to absorb a $A201 million hit after selling ski brand Rossignol for around $A147 million - less than half the price paid three years ago. Quiksilver acquired the French ski maker for $A372 million in cash and stock in 2005.
Hammond's Myer coup
Victorian designer Petrova Hammond wins the right to have one of her designs manufactured by Myer and sold under the Basque private label, after winning a challenge as part of TV reality show Project Runway. The test, presented by Myer merchandise director for fashion and beauty, Judy Coomber, involved designing a Basque outfit to take the wearer "from desk to dinner".
All change @ Just
In late August ragtrader.com.au reports Just Group's future hangs in the balance following the finalisation of a 90 per cent controlling interest in the company by Premier Investments. Reports suggest Just shareholders including finance giant AXA - which has sold a large portion of its stake in Just - are fearful of entrepreneur Solomon Lew becoming Just's major shareholder.
Globe in a spin
Surf and skatewear brand Globe International reveals it will wind down its Australian retail operations, following a $24.6 million loss in the 2008 financial year. As part of a cost-cutting initiative the company has shut stores operating under its PSC Skateboarding arm.
Flagging trade
A retail report finds spending in the clothing and soft goods sector has suffered a significant blow after a "few" months of relative stability. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Retail Trade Report reveals the sector recorded the worst month-on-month result of all major retail categories, with sales falling by 8.8 per cent between May and June 2008.
