US firm uncovers wool secret
NATIONAL: Wool promotion group Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has given its stamp of approval to a US nanotechnology firm that has discovered a way of permanently guarding wool against odours. Following an extensive testing period NanoHorizons, which claims to be a leader in the creation of nanoscale performance additives for the textile industry, has released a product engineered to bond permanently to fibres so it lasts the life of the fabric.
Dubbed SmartSilver, the nanoscale size of the product allows it to work invisibly without compromising other products used with merino wool such as softeners, fire retardants, moisture management and UV protection.
AWI US senior vice president Edwin Nazario said NanoHorizons had provided a "valuable and welcome innovation" for TCF manufacturers who used wool.
"[The technology] provides new options for apparel and footwear designers, especially those in the active and outdoor markets where consumers strongly value odour resistance," Nazario said.
