NATIONAL: Youth fashion retail chain Sportsgirl has announced bold plans for its e-commerce store to deliver up to 10 per cent of overall revenue within the next five years. The news comes as the Melbourne-headquartered brand confirmed sales from its online store were rising 30 per cent each month.

In an interview with Fairfax newspapers printed today (July 24) Sportsgirl's chief executive Elle Roseby declined to disclose actual sales data but said Sportsgirl was topping three million page view per month.

Roseby said while online retailing was very different to traditional retailing, the online environment was the obvious way ahead.

"We thought online would be half as good as one of our small country stores but sales are as big as a country store. In a year they will be equivalent to a medium-sized store and in two years we think it will match a large metropolitan market."

The announcement follows a similar claim by Just Group-owned sleepwear brand Peter Alexander which is already generating around $11 million of its $50 million annual sales from online retailing.
