MELBOURNE: The Victorian headquarters of department store David Jones is set to receive a facelift. The retail giant received State Government approval on June 17 to undertake an $85 million revelopment of its city store. Reports in News Limited newspapers confirmed construction would start immediately with State Planning Minister Justin Madden offering DJ's the "official go ahead".

It is understood the project will see new buildings integrated with the existing Bourke Street store to maintain the historical and architectural significance of the building.

The upper levels of David Jones' two sites will be extended and a glass facade added. All floors will remain open during the development.

The announcement comes less than six months after rival department store Myer began the $250 million redevelopment of its Melbourne CBD store. Both the Myer revamp and stage one of the David Jones revamp are expected to be completed by Christmas 2009.
