MELBOURNE: RMIT University's reputation for innovative collaborations is blooming into full flower.

Third year students from RMIT's fashion course recently gained new insights into the meaning of 'disposable fashion', fulfilling a brief to create garments from flowers.

The results of their endeavours took pride of place in the Flowers 'n' Fashion display in Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building at the 13th Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, which concluded on April 6.

Bread, fruit and leaves were also used to enhance the mainly floral confections which were created to a theme of 'ritual, ceremony and custom'.

The 12 students were given a budget of $200 and had four weeks to design and create their exotic pieces, many of which dealt with the concept of death and religion.

Previous RMIT collaborations include work with major denim wear suppliers and garments made from recycled clothing for Melbourne charitable label Hunter Gatherer.
