National Retail Association names top designers
BRISBANE: First time entrant Lisa Brown beat more seasoned rivals to claim the top prize at the National Retail Association's (NRA) Australian Fashion Design Awards last night.
The Gold Coast designer beat off stiff competition in the form of defending title holder Brad Webb of Darb Couture in being named winner of the supreme award at the AMP Shopping Cnetres-sponsored event.
Her winning entry was a bohemian-inspired collection made from bronze, coral and printed silks and was chosen for its depiction of modern lifestyle.
For her efforts Brown received more than $40,000 in prizes including a car.
A number of special awards were also presented this year with Collette Dinnigan being recognised for Fashion Excellence while Zoo-Ski designer Kimberly Sakzewski was awarded the Rising Star gong.
Other winners on the night included Brides Desire by Airs and Graces (Bridal), Dimitria Bridal Couture (Couture), Karen Neilsen Collection (Swim-Surf), Darb Couture (Fashions on the Field), Lisa Brown (Lifestyle Collections), Little Workers (Childrenswear), Emily Black from Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (Student Design), Ja Delle Designs (Viewers Choice Bridal), Little Workers (Viewers Choice Childrenswear).
The judging panel; included fashion journalist Melissa Hoyer, Designers Wayne Cooper and Trelise Cooper as well as RM Williams executive designer Jonathan Ward.
