Childhood dream jobs
Karah: As I child I never had a "job" in mind, however I always knew it would be something creative. Rebecca: I wanted to be a vet - I love animals
Our first job
Karah: Babysitting. Rebecca: My sister and I traipsed the neighbourhood selling promised lamingtons to our parent's friends. We didn't actually ever get around to making them
Our big break
Karah: When I fell pregnant with my first child, my position as a graphic designer went from full-time to two days a week. It was a real shock, but I made the most of the down time and decided to start Rose & Ruby. Rebecca: Definitely starting Rose & Ruby, I don't think I would have done it if I'd known what we were in for but now I can't ever imagine doing anything else
Our biggest risk
Karah: Changing career paths from a graphic designer/photographer to owning a fashion label. Rebecca: Definitely starting Rose & Ruby, I don't think I would have done it if I'd known what we were in for but now I can't ever imagine doing anything else
Our biggest fashion faux pas
Karah: The early '90s 'grunge outfits' through uni days. Rebecca: Thinking that showing off my midriff for most of the '90s was totally acceptable
Our mentor
Karah: My parents... they're amazing. Rebecca: I have a few, my partner Ryan is a real inspiration to me as he is always working to make things better. I am also very lucky as I have a really wonderful family
If I could do it over
Karah: I would trust my instincts sooner. Rebecca: Learning to not put too much pressure on myself, sometimes you have to say no, or accept that 95 per cent is good enough at times when you have a lot on; I still struggle with that
Our ideas that never took off
Karah: I have always adored chandeliers but have always had low ceilings So decided to photograph them from every angle so that you could still have them hanging in your home as artwork. Rebecca: Selling Lamingtons to neighbours
If we weren't in fashion we'd be
Karah: Designing... anything, everything, anywhere, I can't imagine a life where it didn't revolve around creating. Rebecca: Interior styling, or writing, or maybe a florist, who knows. I would definitely work for myself; I could never go back to working in an office.
