Stewart joins eco-friendly trend
BRISBANE: Queensland designer Emily Stewart wants to take on the world one green stitch at a time.
The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) graduate is doing her bit to ensure a sustainable future for herself and future generations by launching her own ecologically-friendly clothing line.
Set to make its public debut at the impending trade fair Fashion Exposed, Stewart's self-titled label will include dresses, tops, shorts, culottes and pinafores, all of which are made in Australia using ethical manufacturing practices.
Stewart, who graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (fashion) just last year said she was prompted to launch her own line after noticing a lack of Australian fashion labels for a younger market.
"Many niche eco-fashion labels that are targeted at a similar market are from the UK, Europe and the USA, so they aren't made in Australia."
But while noticing an increase in chain stores introducing small collections of clothing made from sustainable materials, Stewart said her label's high quality and attention to detail was its major point of difference.
Appropriately dubbed 'Enchanted by nature', Stewart's first spring/summer range is inspired by the Enid Blyton books from the Faraway Tree series. Constructed from silk/hemp blends and organic cotton, the fabrications are free from harsh chemicals and dyes. Key colours for the season include black, ivory, gold and sage.
Initially available in small, medium or large sizes, Stewart said the price points for her label will vary between $100 and $220 wholesale.
Stewart, whose designs will appear in the 'Debut' section of Fashion Exposed, said she intended using the platform and exposure at the event as a chance to secure domestic stockists.
"As I am just starting out I'm not sure at this point in time [where the label will be stocked]. At this point my goals are just to keep enjoying it and learning the more I do and to be able to come up with new, interesting inspirations and designs for each new season."
