What's Selling In - Camden, NSW

Camden's attitude to big business can best be surmised by the ongoing stoush between its residents and the Megatrons who helm the McDonald's fast food empire. For years the latter has attempted to erect its golden arches along one of its sleepy streets and for years the former has hit back with a flat "no".

Later this month, the local city council will finally decide on a potential site in Camden South, but even this has done little to qual the grizzling sentiments of community members. Put simply, the town doesn't mind a few chains here and there but for the most part, likes to keep things strictly small, friendly and arch free.

Lemon Peel boutique owner Dana Carmont says the only real "large scale" competition comes from retailers such as General Pants, Sportsgirl and Just Jeans - all of whom have sites over half an hour away in Campbelltown. A former Surry Hills resident, Carmont believes Camden has its own unique charm with consumers often choosing her own brands BH Sports and Who is Angie over more high-profile designer labels.

"We cater from people aged 18 right through to women and men in their 40s," she says. "Camden might be a long way from Surry Hills but the people here are still fashion conscious and like to dress well. I think the more exclusive labels you have, the more people will shop at your store."

Labels stocked at Carmont's boutique range from Industrie, Gold Digger and One Teaspoon to authentic European eyewear from Dior and Gucci. Prices range from $30 for sunglasses to $400 for designer dresses.

"So far, so good," she says of her one-and-a-half year old business.

Maki and Madalot Boutique owner Marina Weterkamp, who opened her store at around the same time as Carmont, says she also prefers to keep her price points below the $300 mark. Targeted at the mid to older womenswear market, her boutique sources most of its stock from European or Australian designers such as Cordelia.

"People want all sizes at a good price so I have labels that run from size eight to size 20," she says. "We import a lot from Holland, everything from eveningwear to casual clothing."

Both boutiques are located along Argyle Street, Camden.
