NATIONAL: Jewellery brand Michael Hill International has announced plans to significantly expand its retail portfolio with new openings planned across three international markets.

The announcement will see the New Zealand-headquartered brand opening two stores in its home country and up to 30 new outlets in Australia.

This will take the total number across all three markets to well over 200 - following the opening of 18 new stores (plus three closures) during 2007.

It is understood the brand will look to increase its brand awareness in Canada with a move into Ontario and store openings planned in the greater Toronoto area before Christmas.

Michael Hill grew its presence in the home of the maple leaf significally during 2007, with sales breaking even this fiscal year following a $957,000 operating loss in 2005/06.
