QUEENSLAND: The Australian town better known for its blondes, beers and beaches has broken with tradition.

Townsville local Petra Molokac has sidestepped the local tourist trade and launched a range of "glam" jewellery for women. The debut collection, inspired by the sights and sounds of the north-eastern coastline, includes long chains, large pendants and charms, long earrings and wide bracelets.

Priced from $49 to $200, it is locally manufactured using Czech crystals, freshwater pearls, tiger eye, red coral, moon stone, Indian glass beads and wooden ornaments. Handcrafted pendants are created out of cowrie, bone, buffalo horn and wood with various nickel chains and one-off jewellery finds adding the final touch.

At her official launch during Rosemount Australian Trans-seasonal Fashion Week, Molokac said she hoped to secure nationwide stockists before taking on the international market.

"My strategy is to promote my label and my product wherever I can and mainly try to win over as many stockists. There is nothing more satisfying than customers buying your product and really loving it."
