Katwalker: A match made in heaven?

Movies and fashion always seem to go together... like Fred and Ginger, Sonny and Cher, Bacall and Bogard or gin and tonic... although on reflection, as with the last two, too much of the mix invariably results in a dramatic departure from reality.

I still remember wafting around my bedroom sporting a pair of jodhpurs and my mother's best embroidered cream blouse while wistfully intoning the words "Aaah haad a faaarm in Aaaafricaah... at the foooot of the Ngong heeels", having been intoxicated not by gin and tonic but by Merryl Streep's Out of Africa getup. More recently I've been assaulted by disturbing flashbacks of the Desperately Seeking Susan and Flashdance variety, thanks to the return to our wardrobes of footless tights, leg warmers, oversize sloppy tops and hipster belts.

I also seem to notice Jennifer Aniston Along came Polly look-alikes almost everywhere within a 10km radius of Sportsgirl outlets, while arts or fashion students from our esteemed tertiary institutions instantaneously recall Thora Birch's Enid from Ghostworld - all cultish black rimmed glasses, severe bobs and mismatched geek chic. Sadly the trend never seems to affect menswear with quite the same verve. I suppose we have Reservoir Dogs to thank for all those dark suits and thin ties, but I'm still holding out for tight britches, flowing locks and cravats, which have failed to materialise despite numerous renditions of Jane Austen novels.
