Jane Is... whatever you fancy
So much so that she has based the first collection of her fledgling jewellery label Jane Is... around all things equine.
"The concept behind the label is to take the idea of 'Jane Is...' and add different tags to it. So this range is dubbed 'Jane Is... Into Horse Riding'. It's all about plaited leather, chains and pony club trinkets including D rings, rivets and clips all found in saddlery. I really just started making the jewellery for myself but I've had such positive feedback from both men and women that I decided to launch the range commercially."
Each item in the 12-piece collection is handcrafted and unique, with prices ranging from $65 to $105. Moss, tan, whisky and black leather are teamed with brass, silver and gold pieces, with key items including the 'show pony'; fine double strands of plaited leather riveted to horse shoe clasps, with chain adornments.
The range is currently being promoted through media showings in Sydney, and Harris has received strong interest from Melbourne stockists including Lovers Lane boutique in Chapel Street.
"I want to keep it fairly small and exclusive, with one or two stockists in Melbourne and Sydney. I think people like the idea of being able to wear something no-one else has got."
Next season will see the range take on a summer palette including yellow, purple and silver leather, while future concepts will allow Harris to follow wherever her fancy takes her.
"I'm planning to travel to Bali to source silver trinkets as the artisans there are fantastic. I'll be able to get special pieces, using beautiful, simple images engraved on silver; or painted images on silver."
