Hatchlings find safety in numbers
It's certainly all happening," said the designer. Runny nose and stress aside, at least she was confident of making splash in the market by banding together with fellow hatchlings for a joint label launch.
Sgro's self named label is inspired by "a passion for the fine arts, cinematography and popular culture" and comprises 11 edgy, tailoring-inspired pieces including pants, knits, dresses, a jacket and a jumpsuit in a bold graphic palette. Manufactured locally, the clothes are distinguished by close attention to detail and standout finishes.
"I don't compromise on quality," claimed the designer, adding she hoped to gain distribution for the collection - priced between $150 and $350 wholesale - in three to four stockists across Sydney and Melbourne.
Sgro - who also has a jewellery collection comprising laser cut acrylic accessories, currently stocked in Sydney's top3 by design boutique - will launch her clothing from April 19 to 26 at blank_space in Surry Hills in a venture dubbed '4321 - Four designers. Three collections. Together. One Space'.
4321 will also feature jewellery brand Scratch designs - in the form of Lea Calodolce and Carina Sidwell and Rachael Cassar's self-named high end label. Scratch is inspired by the neon colours, laser lights and pulsing beats common to the dance music scene, while Rachael Cassar's high end experimental pieces are designed around the concept of sustainability. Sgro confirmed all four designers formed a strong friendship as finalists in the Lancôme Colour Design Awards 2006.
"We all have studios in close proximity to one another and we inspire each other. It's great to be launching together as our labels are all quite different, which makes it an interesting experience for attendees."
