Birgers Australian taste test

SYDNEY: Australia's Princess Mary may have won over Danish hearts with her sense of style but now Scandinavian designer Malene Birger is set to return the favour.
Already exporting to 15 countries worldwide, the Copenhagen-based designer has set her sights firmly on Australia, securing a Sydney-based distributor and already making plans to launch a full scale assault across all states.
Brought to Australia by Sydney company Higgovale, the 'By Malene Birger' range features coats, dresses, jackets, pants, skirts and knitwear.
With a heavy focus on cut and attention to detail, the clasically-inspired collection has been positioned alongside popular international competitors Filippa K, Tara Jarmon and Paul and Joe.
Founded in 2003 after Birger split from former business partner Keld Mikkelsen - the luxurious label posted an impressive 78 per cent year-on-year revenue increase last year with high hopes it will do equally well across Australia and New Zealand.
Higgovale spokesperson Kate Benson said having secured high profile stockists such as Selfridges in London, Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Bergdorf Goodman in the US, the time seemed right for the label to be brought down under.
"We felt this collection would work so well [in this part of the world] because it does offer a high fashion look but is still an affordable level which can appeal to a broad customer base."
Targeted at women aged between 20 and 35, the brand has made a great start out of the blocks having already been Instore from mid-July, the range will be available in Danish sizes 33 to 44 (Australian sizes six to 16) while shoes will come in sizes 36 to 41. Price points vary from $80 for T-shirts to $800 for coats.
