It was an overwhelming general consenus: the future of Australian theatre is in good hands. Audiences at the TAFE Sydney Institute's 2006 Theatrical Costume Showcase were unable to hold back their applause as creations for dance, stage, screen and entertainment took to the runway.
Kicking off the night with dancing coconut women and a good old fashioned hoe-down, the event featured everything from a bosomed Lucifer to a chorus of bronzed ballerinas. Dramatic performances also brought the costumes to life as actors and dancers bopped, pranced, sighed and laughed throughout every presentation.
The designer behind 'The Mummy Returns', Rosemary Johnston even took the time to enthuse about her experience.
"I learnt new skills in armour making, printing, mask making and in particular- ageing costumes," she said. "I have always been fascinated with Ancient Egyptian culture so this gave me an opportunity to recreate costumes of this era."
Up to nine students joined Johnston in unveiling their major projects with Dot Thompson's cheeky green devil and Catherine Burton's '50s belle making a lasting impression.
One student, Pamela Reeves also took the opportunity to joke about the process; admitting she was somewhat jaded by the long hours of gruelling work.
"It may be a while before I can face using pearls again - there are over 3,000 on these costumes."
