What a time those Ragtrader Retailer of the Year Awards (ROTY) judges have had, tearing around the country to keep to their schedule of interviews. Passers by in each state who witnessed two crazed females shooting the wrong way down one way streets, stranded on tramways or careering through multi-story car parks could be forgiven for thinking they had just stepped into the shoot of a bizarre reality TV hit or of Thelma and Louise II.

For their part, while losing points for punctuality, the judges should be congratulated for their forbearance. It can't be easy walking into an enticing fashion store and knowing that instead of succumbing to credit card nirvana, you must engage the owner in probing questions about his or her business. As for the driving infringements, as a famous motivational guru once said: "There are no speed limits on the road to excellence." I'm sure most retailers would agree.
